Portugal has submitted a request for loans amounting to 5.8 billion euros, with reduced interest rates, through the European defense program SAFE, announced by Cabinet Minister Antonio Leitao Amaro. SAFE, a European Union program worth 150 billion euros, aims to strengthen defense capabilities and cover critical gaps in the context of increased threats from Russia. The loans offered are long-term, up to 45 years, with a grace period of 10 years. Leitao Amaro emphasized the importance of this effort for the defense of Europe's territory and maritime space. Although he did not specify the type of equipment desired, the official mentioned that the goal is to strengthen the Portuguese industry. The European Commission will evaluate the spending plans of member states, with the first payment approvals estimated for the beginning of 2026. The European executive encourages the identification of essential defense needs and the launch of joint projects at the European level.
