In a message on the occasion of World Social Communications Day, Pope Leo XIV expressed concerns about the risks associated with artificial intelligence, especially in the case of chatbot-based large language models, such as ChatGPT. He emphasized that these technologies can influence thinking by reproducing stereotypes and biases from the data used. The Pope warned about the oligopolistic control exercised by a few companies over AI and highlighted the need to govern digital innovation, not to stop it.

He also called for the integration of media literacy and AI in education, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness of the ambivalent nature of these technologies. Additionally, the Pope criticized the use of AI in the military field, considering that delegating life and death decisions to machines is a "destructive spiral."
