General Wieslaw Kukula, head of the Polish Armed Forces General Staff, warned about the existential threat that Russia poses to Poland, highlighting the delays in modernizing the army, despite record spending on defense.

Poland, which allocates 4.8% of its GDP for defense, is approaching NATO's target of 5% by 2035, but suffers from three decades of underfunding. Although the Polish army will grow to 500,000 soldiers by 2039, some units lack the necessary equipment.

In addition, Poland will receive 43.7 billion euros through the European SAFE instrument to boost domestic arms production, despite opposition fears that this mechanism could affect national sovereignty.
