A new law in Poland restricts social assistance for Ukrainian refugees, providing support only to vulnerable groups, after four years of war.

A new law limiting social assistance for Ukrainian refugees has come into effect in Poland, four years after the start of the war in Ukraine. Adopted at the end of January, the law imposes restrictions on social services, medical insurance, legal residence, and education for refugees.

According to the new regulations, social assistance will only be available for minors, employed individuals, victims of torture or rape, as well as vulnerable groups in accommodation centers. Adam Szlapka, government spokesperson, stated that the situation has stabilized, allowing a transition from temporary solutions to systemic ones. Although food and housing assistance are restricted, Ukrainian refugees maintain a protected status in Poland until March 2027. A recent survey shows that public opinion is divided, with 48% of Poles supporting assistance for refugees.
