Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz, the Polish Minister of Defense, has asked Spain, France, and Italy to increase and raise military spending to strengthen the security of the European Union and NATO. This request comes in the context where Germany, Poland, and the Scandinavian countries have already responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's calls to increase Europe's responsibility in defense matters. Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that a greater investment in defense would lead to more serious treatment from America.
At the NATO summit in 2025, member states committed to increasing their defense budgets to 5% of GDP by 2035. Poland, which raised its defense budget to 4.48% of GDP last year and plans 4.8% in 2026, urges other states to follow this example, although many do not agree. In contrast, the military budgets of France, Italy, and Spain are significantly smaller, and Spain has rejected Trump's request, considering it disproportionate. Poland, having become the largest European buyer of American weapons, is thus strengthening its position against Russia.
