On Monday evening, July 14, torrential downpours flooded parts of New York and New Jersey, and flash flood warnings were in effect for much of the East Coast. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency, and JFK, LaGuardia and Newark airports temporarily suspended departures, forcing the cancellation of dozens of flights. Flooding paralyzed traffic and in some areas, cars were stranded.
