Péter Magyar met face-to-face with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels and expressed Hungary’s solidarity with Ukraine amid the war launched by Russia. The two discussed the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia and the need to rebuild political and economic relations between the two countries.
According to a message posted by Magyar on Facebook, he welcomed the political agreement between Hungary and Ukraine on strengthening the rights of the Hungarian community. He mentioned the adoption by the Ukrainian Parliament of legislation concerning minority education and its implementation by the authorities in Kyiv, considering these measures a first step toward restoring trust.
Magyar also welcomed the decision by the Ukrainian Parliament in September recognizing crimes committed against Hungarians in Transcarpathia between 1944 and 1946, including mass deportations and forced labor.
Dialogue between the two states is set to continue at ministerial level, with a focus on the situation of minorities. Magyar said Hungary is prepared to support, through diplomatic means, efforts to secure a swift ceasefire and lasting peace.
