The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru announced on Monday the breaking of diplomatic relations with Mexico, after Mexico granted asylum to former government chief Betssy Chavez. She is being pursued for her alleged involvement in the failed coup d'état in December 2022, orchestrated by former president Pedro Castillo. The foreign minister, Hugo de Zela, expressed regret over this decision, emphasizing that the Peruvian government was surprised by the asylum granted to Chavez.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated after Castillo's ousting, when Mexico offered asylum to his wife and children. Although diplomatic relations are affected, bilateral trade exchanges have continued. Betssy Chavez is being tried for rebellion, and the Prosecutor's Office is seeking a 25-year prison sentence. Pedro Castillo has been in preventive detention since December 2022, after he attempted to dissolve Parliament.
