The President of Benin, Patrice Talon, stated that the government and armed forces managed to thwart an attempted coup orchestrated by a group of soldiers. The announcement was made shortly after gunfire was heard in Cotonou, the country's largest city, where soldiers claimed to have ousted Talon from power.
Talon emphasized that loyal forces have recaptured positions and eliminated the last pockets of resistance, promising that betrayal will not go unpunished. By Sunday afternoon, 14 people had been arrested in connection with the coup attempt. This situation poses a threat to democracy in the region, where the military has taken power in several neighboring countries in recent years.
