OpenAI has presented a vision for the economic future, proposing a set of policies that include a four-day workweek and the creation of a Public Investment Fund. These proposals come in the context of managing the economic impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and aim to broaden the distribution of wealth generated by AI, build social protection mechanisms, and ensure access to AI capabilities. The company warns that labor income will decrease, thus proposing to shift the tax burden from labor to capital, including a possible robot tax, an idea previously put forward by Bill Gates.
OpenAI also suggests subsidizing childcare and elder care, as well as increasing pension contributions. Additionally, the company acknowledges the risks associated with AI and proposes isolation plans for dangerous AI and new oversight bodies. OpenAI emphasizes that AI should be treated as a public utility service, and its proposals come after the company has become a for-profit entity, raising questions about the compatibility of its mission with its obligations to shareholders.
