Octavian Ursu, of Romanian origin and candidate of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), won a second term as mayor of the city of Görlitz, located in the state of Saxony, Germany, following the local elections. In the second round, Ursu received 55.8% of the votes, while Sebastian Wippel, the candidate of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), received 44.2%. In these elections, 44,500 people had the right to vote, and the voter turnout was 56.8%. Octavian Ursu was born in Bucharest in 1967 and settled in Görlitz in 1990, having a successful music career. The reaction of USR leader Dominic Fritz was positive, emphasizing that Ursu's victory is not only his but also a victory for European values, considering the cultural and economic ties between Görlitz and the Polish city of Zgorzelec.
