Barack Obama responded on Wednesday, in Georgia, to Republicans’ reactions after he mocked the White House décor and criticized Donald Trump, a few days before the November 3 elections, which will determine control of Congress.
In a speech delivered in Ohio, the former president compared the gold-decorated presidential residence to one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces transformed into a Cheesecake Factory restaurant. The joke went viral and prompted a reaction from Trump, who praised the restaurant chain and called Obama “a two-bit president.”
At a rally in Morrow, near Atlanta, Obama said that Republicans had mobilized a government response to the joke instead of focusing on inflation and rising prices. He argued that the Trump administration was avoiding economic issues and stated that the election also had a moral dimension.
Obama has recently become more active in the campaign, supporting Democrats, including Senator Jon Ossoff, who is running in Georgia. Polls indicate that Democrats have a chance to regain the House of Representatives, while the race for the Senate remains close.
Donald Trump is continuing his campaign tour to mobilize Republicans. Approximately 40 million Americans had already voted early, according to the University of Florida.
