Nvidia, in collaboration with the American fiber optic manufacturer Corning, will build three new factories in North Carolina and Texas, dedicated to the optical technologies used by Nvidia. The project, announced on Wednesday, will generate at least 3,000 jobs and will increase Corning's production capacity in the U.S. tenfold. This initiative comes against the backdrop of increasing investments in artificial intelligence (AI) following the launch of ChatGPT in 2022.
Nvidia produces the essential graphics processors for AI development, while Corning provides the necessary fiber optic infrastructure for connecting data centers. The 'integrated optics' technology will allow for the replacement of copper cables with fiber optics, reducing energy consumption and accelerating data transfer. Corning's CEO, Wendell Weeks, emphasized the energy efficiency of photon transport compared to electrons.
Nvidia recently invested $4 billion in companies that produce lasers for signal conversion, thus strengthening its AI infrastructure. Corning, known for its glass products, is becoming a key supplier for major technology companies in the fiber optic field.
