North Korea tested a fragmentation weapon capable of destroying an area of 13 hectares

North Korea recently tested a fragmentation weapon launched from a mobile vehicle, which officials say can “reduce to ashes” an area of 12–13 hectares at maximum power. The test was part of a series of military exercises conducted in recent days, which also included attack drones and approximately ten ballistic missiles.

The director general of North Korea’s Missile Administration said that this year, military units will be able to select and use different types of weaponry depending on their operational objectives and the characteristics of their targets.

Images released by the state-run KCNA news agency show a projectile launched from a mobile system, surrounded by a cloud of orange smoke. Other photographs show several impact areas caused by the weapon on an island, where it was tested to assess its effects.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un did not attend the latest test. However, he oversaw a similar exercise in April, accompanied at the time by his daughter, Ju Ae. Authorities in Pyongyang provided no further details about the test site or the exact type of weapon.
