According to a document presented by the Ministry of Unification of South Korea, the latest version of the Constitution of North Korea, adopted in March, no longer contains the clause mentioning that the country 'strives for the realization of the unification of the motherland'.

The new Constitution defines the territory of North Korea, including the northern area bordering China and Russia, but also the 'Republic of Korea in the south', using the official name for South Korea. The text emphasizes that North Korea 'does not tolerate any violation of its territory'.

Kim Jong-un has called South Korea 'the most hostile enemy state', while South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has made calls for the resumption of dialogue without preconditions. Despite reconciliation initiatives, Kim Jong-un continues to strengthen his nuclear arsenal and develop relations with Russia, receiving economic assistance in exchange for support offered in the conflict in Ukraine.

The two Koreas remain technically at war, their conflict being suspended by an armistice from 1953.
