A boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea, leaving nine dead and 15 missing. Authorities rescued 22 survivors.

The shipwreck occurred about 50 km southeast of the island of Lampedusa. Rescue operations were difficult due to bad weather conditions. In a separate operation, the Italian coastguard rescued 37 migrants who were at the mercy of the waves off the coast of Lampedusa.
