Nicolas Maduro is now in an American prison, after being captured during a special forces raid. Before his capture, the Holy See attempted to mediate a diplomatic exit, offering Maduro the possibility to leave for Russia with his entourage and part of the wealth accumulated since he took power in 2013. Cardinal Pietro Parolin discussed with the American ambassador the plans of the United States in Venezuela, considering Donald Trump's hostility towards Maduro, who is accused of drug trafficking. Although the Holy See hoped for Maduro's resignation after his controversial re-election in 2024, the Venezuelan leader rejected the offer, believing that the Americans would not intervene. However, the intervention of the special forces demonstrated the contrary, highlighting the risks of the political game in which Maduro has engaged.
