New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday the online publication of tens of thousands of documents concerning what the municipality knew about toxic air in the Ground Zero area after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The documents trace when authorities learned about the dangers associated with the toxic cloud and how they subsequently responded. Mamdani said the materials also show whether the municipality took steps to limit its legal liability.

The publication was decided as part of an agreement with 9/11 Health Watch, an organization that advocates for victims and sued the municipality to obtain the documents. The organization’s director, Ben Chevat, said Mamdani is the first mayor in the past 25 years to begin publicly answering questions about the risks known to authorities.

Asked about officials who may have concealed information, the mayor said they included numerous people whom New Yorkers had trusted. The attacks killed 2,977 people, while more than 9,400 people later died from conditions associated with exposure.
