The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu generated controversy after he referred to Great Britain as an "Islamic republic" in a radio interview, claiming that it is "the first Islamic republic to have obtained a nuclear weapon." His comments, which align with some Islamophobic stereotypes, have been criticized by political rivals, including Avi Dabush, who highlighted Netanyahu's diplomatic failure in maintaining relations with traditional allies.

Relations between Great Britain and Israel have recently deteriorated, especially after Andy Burnham became Prime Minister, promising a more critical approach towards Israel's actions in Gaza. Additionally, similar comments to those of Netanyahu have been made by American Vice President JD Vance, and Muslim leaders in Great Britain have signaled an increase in acts of hatred. The office of the Israeli Prime Minister has not commented on whether Netanyahu's statements reflect the official position of the government.
