Javier Colomina, NATO's special representative for southern neighborhood, advocated for a stronger Alliance, with a reinforced European pillar, but which should remain within the framework of the transatlantic link. Speaking at the La Toja Forum in Lisbon, Colomina highlighted the challenges posed by the administration of President Donald Trump, which have been different from those of previous administrations.
He mentioned that the current days are complicated for NATO for various reasons, not all related to the behavior of the American president. Colomina emphasized the importance of Europe having a united and stronger voice, without becoming an alternative to the existing structure. Maintaining the transatlantic link is essential, considering that the U.S. contributes over half of NATO's defense budget, despite the efforts of Europeans and Canadians to increase their defense spending.
