NATO member states are intensifying efforts to expand the production of explosives and propellants for ammunition, in response to the vulnerabilities of the defense industry highlighted by the conflict in Ukraine. Romania is included in these plans, with Brașov as a potential production center.

Currently, there are at least 24 new projects underway in NATO countries, aimed at reducing dependence on imports of essential chemicals. The war has revealed a strong dependence on imports, and the U.S. and its allies still lack real autonomy in ammunition production.

In the United States, the construction of three new propellant factories is planned in Arkansas, and Romania will develop production capabilities in Brașov. In Europe, the expansion of TNT production is expected in several countries, including Finland, Sweden, and Poland. NATO thus aims to improve supply chains and restore the industrial capacities necessary for defense.
