NATO fighter jets shot down, on Tuesday, a drone that had entered Lithuanian airspace from Belarus and was heading west, President Gitanas Nausėda announced. According to preliminary data cited by public broadcaster LRT, the aircraft crashed in a rural area near Lake Kaunas, in the center of the country.

The incident occurred amid an intensification of drone incursions on NATO’s eastern flank, in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Nausėda emphasized that maintaining a high level of readiness is essential for the security of the region.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys thanked the allies for their intervention, calling it an example of NATO’s unity and vigilance. On the same day, Poland announced preventive air operations following the activity of Russian drones attacking targets in Ukraine.
