The NATO organization has announced that it will abandon the purchase of Boeing E-7 Wedgetail aircraft to replace the AWACS fleet, following the withdrawal of the United States from this program. The Dutch Ministry of Defense reported that the Netherlands, along with other partner countries, has decided not to purchase the six aircraft that were to replace the Boeing E-3A planes used for aerial reconnaissance.
The current aircraft will continue to operate until the end of their lifespan, estimated for 2035. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of accelerating the process of replacing the fleet, without specifying a new manufacturer, but highlighting the need to invest in the European industry.
