The Netherlands is extending the deployment of MQ-9 Reaper drones from Câmpia Turzii until December 31, 2027

The Netherlands will maintain MQ-9 Reaper drones operated from Câmpia Turzii, Romania, until December 31, 2027, to support the defense of NATO’s Eastern Flank. The mission’s extension was announced Thursday by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Romania.

The Dutch Ministry of Defence uses these aircraft as part of Air Policing operations. The drones collect aerial data and intelligence, while their onboard sensors contribute to creating a comprehensive situational picture of the region. The aircraft are part of NATO’s broader Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capability.

The Dutch mission is taking place as European allies seek to address gaps that have emerged in the Alliance’s defense plans following the gradual reduction of certain U.S. military capabilities made available to NATO. In May, the United States informed its allies that it would reduce the contribution of certain military systems in the event of a crisis.

According to information cited by Reuters, the reductions concern fighter jets, drones, tanker aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft and ships. The number of U.S. MQ-4 and MQ-9 Reaper drones available to NATO is expected to be cut in half, to 12. The Netherlands’ decision therefore strengthens allied aerial surveillance on the eastern flank at a time of increased pressure on NATO.
