The process in which Meta is accused of designing the Instagram and Facebook platforms to create addiction among children begins Tuesday in California.
The company is accused of violating laws regarding the protection of minors and data privacy, being suspected of misleading the public about the safety of its platforms. California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey are seeking damages of approximately 200 billion dollars and significant changes to the operation of these platforms, including the removal of the display of the number of likes and the introduction of a parental verification system.
Mark Zuckerberg will testify in the trial, which is estimated to last between six and eight weeks, with a verdict expected in October. This case is part of a broader effort by U.S. authorities, and Meta is facing multiple legal actions related to the negative effects of its platforms on young people.
The trial is considered one of the most important in the context of legal disputes with social networks in the U.S.
