A jury in New Mexico ordered Meta, the owner of Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, to pay $375 million for the harm caused to children's mental health and for making minors vulnerable to sexual exploitation. This is the first time a U.S. state has won a lawsuit against Meta on child safety issues. Jurors supported the allegations that Meta prioritized profits over safety, violating New Mexico's Unfair Trade Practices Act. During the trial, testimonies from 40 witnesses and hundreds of documents were presented. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez stated that the verdict represents a historic victory for children and families. A second phase of the trial will begin in May, when additional penalties and necessary changes to Meta's platforms will be discussed. Additionally, another jury in California is evaluating Meta and YouTube's responsibility in cases of addiction and harm to children.
