The German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the European Union to use all available resources to assert its power on the international stage and counter the dominance of the United States.

In a speech in the Bundestag, Merz emphasized the need for Europe to identify its interests and develop a power potential that ensures their respect. He mentioned that European partners are increasingly willing to use the resources of the community bloc to promote fairness and adherence to international rules. Merz also stated that Berlin would have advised the US not to attack Iran if it had been consulted, and reiterated the refusal to send German warships into the Strait of Hormuz, following Donald Trump's request. The Chancellor emphasized that the European Union should not be underestimated, having a larger population than the US.
