American Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized Spain and NATO allies for the limited support given in the war with Iran, suggesting a possible reevaluation of the U.S. position towards the North Atlantic Alliance after the conclusion of the conflict in the Middle East. Rubio emphasized that Spain, a NATO member, denied the U.S. access to its airspace and encountered resistance in the use of military bases in the country.

He stated that if NATO is limited to defending Europe but refuses the basic rights of the U.S. in times of need, this arrangement is not beneficial. He also mentioned that Spain recently closed its airspace to flights related to the conflict in Iran and prohibited the use of the Rota and Moron bases for American operations.

Rubio's criticisms come against the backdrop of previous grievances expressed by President Donald Trump regarding NATO allies for insufficient support.
