The march dedicated to the memory of Quentin Deranque, a 23-year-old student killed in a beating by members of the far left, is scheduled for Saturday evening in Lyon, under heightened security conditions. Deranque was attacked on February 12 by a group of at least six people. Authorities are expecting possible confrontations, deploying a large security apparatus.
President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that violence is not legitimate in the Republic and announced a government meeting to analyze violent groups linked to political parties. Six suspects have been charged with voluntary manslaughter, and a parliamentary assistant has been charged with complicity. Deranque's death has sparked a dispute between Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who commented on the climate of ideological hatred in Europe. Meloni pointed out that the incident reflects a broader problem, similar to the period of violence in Italy between 1969 and 1980.
