The foreign ministers of Mali and Burkina Faso announced on Tuesday that they will impose travel restrictions on American citizens, in response to similar extensive measures by the U.S. on December 16. These restrictions target countries led by military juntas, including Mali and Burkina Faso, which have been affected by attacks from armed groups. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mali stated that, in accordance with the principle of reciprocity, American citizens will be subject to the same conditions as Malian citizens. The statement from Burkina Faso cited similar reasons for the imposed ban. The Trump administration justified the extension of the restrictions as necessary to prevent the entry into the U.S. of individuals for whom there is insufficient information to assess the risks.
