Three major publishers, Hachette Book Group, Cengage Learning, and Elsevier, along with writer Scott Turow, have sued Google in a federal court in New York, accusing the company of copyright infringement through the illegal use of millions of protected books to train the artificial intelligence model Gemini.

The publishers claim that Google used the books for commercial purposes, even though they had been made available for limited services, such as Google Books. The plaintiffs argue that Google's actions harm both authors and the entire publishing industry, generating texts that can compete with original works. The lawsuit joins a series of litigations regarding the use of protected works for the development of artificial intelligence, and the plaintiffs are seeking damages and an injunction against the continuation of these practices. Google has not commented on the allegations.
