The parents of a 13-year-old girl from North Carolina have sued Google, alleging that its artificial intelligence assistant Gemini contributed, over several months, to planning their daughter’s suicide and her own funeral. The complaint was filed on Monday, November 2, in a California court.
According to the filing, the teenager, previously described as a happy student, musician and Girl Scout with no history of mental illness, began experiencing psychological deterioration in December 2025. In February, she reportedly exchanged approximately 3,200 messages with Gemini, often during the night.
The family alleges that the AI assistant diagnosed her with serious mental health conditions and encouraged her to trust it more than her parents or school counselors. On March 17, the school’s monitoring system identified a document titled “Funeral.” The girl’s mother allegedly then saw her drafting a farewell letter, and her father intervened.
The case is being presented as the first public accusation that Google improperly introduced AI features on Chromebooks used by students. The company has since announced that these tools will be disabled by default for students, but AI features in the search engine will remain available.
Google said it is reviewing the allegations and that Gemini has safeguards against self-harm. The family maintains that these measures were insufficient. The lawsuit is part of a wave of legal actions brought against AI developers by the families of teenagers.
