Macron, support for Ukraine: France promises energy aid, radars, and interceptor missiles

French President Emmanuel Macron met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and announced new measures to support Kyiv amid Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.

Macron warned that strikes on Ukraine’s energy system risk leaving millions of families without heating and electricity during the winter. France will support Ukraine in coping with the cold season, while the G7 energy group will also mobilize to support it.

The French president also announced the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defenses. France will sign a contract to deliver radars and will provide interceptor missiles, although details regarding the quantities or delivery schedule were not specified.

During the discussions, Macron and Zelenskyy also addressed US President Donald Trump’s support, as well as the prospect of an energy ceasefire and a moratorium in the Black Sea. Macron said these issues will be important in negotiations that must resume and should lead to a “just and lasting” peace.
