In a speech delivered in Antwerp, Belgium, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that transforming Europe into an "independent power" is essential to face economic threats from China and the USA. He emphasized the need for a united and swift approach to avoid the fragmentation affecting Europe.
Macron proposed the issuance of eurobonds, a common financial instrument to support investments in areas such as defense, clean technologies, and artificial intelligence. Although this idea is supported by France, it has been rejected by other member states, including Germany. The president highlighted the urgency of these measures, warning that "soon it will be too late." He also called on member states to implement reforms of the European single market, suggesting that, in the absence of progress, "enhanced cooperation" may be necessary.
