Macron warns, at the UN General Assembly, against a return to the “law of the jungle”

French President Emmanuel Macron defended multilateralism and the role of the UN in his latest speech to the organization’s General Assembly before the end of his term at the Élysée Palace. He warned of the return of imperialism, “force without rules,” and a world dominated by the law of the strongest.

Macron called on states to defend a “civilized international society” based on common rules, borders, and respect for sovereignty. He argued that the UN must regain its vitality and advocated defending justice and the common interest.

Regarding the war in Ukraine, the French leader proposed a dual moratorium on attacks against energy infrastructure in Russia and Ukraine. He also called for a moratorium in the Black Sea to facilitate grain shipments and reduce risks to food security.

Referring to the war in Gaza, Macron criticized the international community’s inaction and reaffirmed his support for the two-state solution, which he described as essential to the security of Israel and the Palestinian people.

The French president also advocated developing artificial intelligence independent of the United States and China. He proposed a “coalition of the independent,” which would pool its investments and computing capacity to create an open-source AI model. The speech ended with an appeal for firmness in the face of the world’s progressive division.
