These criticisms have arisen in the context of Macron's campaign to combat the risks of social networks to democracy, which includes measures such as a "digital major" at 15 years old and transparency of algorithms. The weekly Journal du Dimanche, owned by Bollore, denounced these measures as a "totalitarian drift," comparing them to George Orwell's novel "1984."

In a meeting with the Council of Ministers, Macron emphasized that there will be no special label for the press and that the role of the government is not to impose a single narrative. The controversy reflects a broader struggle for freedom of expression, especially in the context of media influence by billionaires.
