French President Emmanuel Macron reacted negatively to the European Commission's decision to provisionally apply the trade agreement with the South American bloc Mercosur, considering it an "unpleasant surprise" and an "ugly way" to act in front of the European Parliament, which has called for an assessment of the agreement's compatibility with EU legislation.

Macron emphasized the Commission's responsibility towards European farmers and citizens who were not properly consulted. In contrast, ministers from Germany, Italy, and Spain welcomed the decision, seeing it as an opportunity for economic growth. Although the agreement was voted on in the EU Council, France and a few other countries opposed it, fearing the impact on local farmers. The Commission did not specify the start date for provisional application, and Macron promised to defend France's agricultural interests in the face of this agreement.
