Maria Corina Machado, a Venezuelan activist, has confirmed that she will be present at the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony, which will take place in Oslo. Kristian Berg Harpviken mentioned that, for security reasons, details about her travel cannot be disclosed.
The Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, warned that Machado could be considered a 'fugitive' if she travels to Norway to receive the award, which is awarded on October 10. The opposition's activities in Venezuela have been severely repressed, with approximately 2,400 arrests following the protests after the contested elections in July 2024, which were challenged by Machado and supported by the international community. Machado, who has been in hiding since August 2024, is a critic of Nicolas Maduro's regime, which she accuses of electoral fraud and ties to drug trafficking, while also supporting the presence of the American military in the region.
