The Lithuanian government has decided to accept half of the migrants allocated through the European Union's solidarity mechanism for next year, while for the rest of the quotas it will pay a financial contribution. The Minister of the Interior, Vladislav Kondratovic, emphasized that this decision reflects Lithuania's solidarity as an EU member state, acknowledging the help received in the past. Lithuania is obligated to accept approximately 158 migrants annually according to the Pact on Migration and Asylum, adopted in May 2024, or to contribute financially with 3.28 million euros. Additionally, Lithuania will receive 10,000 euros from the EU Fund for each relocated person. This measure will come into effect in June 2026, and the financial contributions will need to be included in the national budget for the following year. Lithuania has always been cautious regarding the acceptance of migrants, having registered over 211,000 individuals with valid residence permits.
