In the northeast Indian state of Bihar, powerful thunderstorms have killed at least 33 people, most of them struck by lightning while working in agriculture. Authorities reported that lightning killed 243 people in 2024 and 275 in 2023. These events are common during the monsoon season, and scientists point out that global warming is intensifying these extreme phenomena.
