The Italian defense company Leonardo has unveiled 'Michelangelo's Dome', a defense system based on artificial intelligence, designed to protect towns and critical infrastructures in Europe in the context of geopolitical tensions. This shield will act as a security umbrella against drone and missile attacks, aiming to protect critical infrastructure and strategic assets. Leonardo's CEO, Roberto Cingolani, emphasized the importance of innovation in defense, considering the complex and costly threats.
'Michelangelo's Dome' stands out by integrating state-of-the-art sensors from various domains, including land, naval, air, and space, as well as by using artificial intelligence to detect and neutralize threats. The system is capable of anticipating hostile activity and coordinating effective countermeasures. Although Europe has increased defense spending, it is unclear whether the new technology will be integrated into the Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), aimed at strengthening the continent's security. The project is expected to be operational by the end of this decade.
