Prior to the meeting between Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart, President Donald Trump said that he did not believe Russia and China were involved in the conflict with Iran, stating that both Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin had assured him that Beijing and Moscow would not supply weapons to the Islamic Republic, including through Chinese companies. Meanwhile, according to information from US intelligence circles, Iranian attacks on CIA targets triggered an investigation into possible Russian assistance to Iran, while the US imposed sanctions on entities in Russia and China for support related to weapons procurement.
Against the backdrop of tensions in the region, the press also reported that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to meet with Vladimir Putin next week in Kyrgyzstan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The discussions are expected to be related to a recently announced $25 billion agreement between Iran and Russia on the construction of new nuclear power plants, while the Iranian side stated that the site for a nuclear facility near the Persian Gulf had already been designated.
