Mississippi officials discovered KKK paraphernalia and critical materials regarding Martin Luther King Jr. during the office move.

Officials in Mississippi found the complete Ku Klux Klan costume and a pamphlet critical of Martin Luther King Jr. during the cleaning of a Department of Public Safety office, as part of preparations for moving to a new building. The materials, dating from the 1960s, included recruitment materials, meeting notes, and registers. One of the pamphlets, titled "The Ugly Truth About Martin Luther King," was published by the United Klans of America.

The documents were handed over to the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) for archiving. DPS Commissioner Sean Tindell emphasized the importance of preserving these artifacts to prevent the spread of hate in the future. Barry White, the new director of MDAH, appreciated the handover of the materials, highlighting their significance for researchers. Among the discoveries were also articles about the Freedom Rides, protests from 1961 against segregation, which were denounced by former DPS chief T.B. Birdsong as being inspired by communists. Processing the documents will take several months.
