Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will not undertake official royal duties after returning to the United Kingdom, according to a letter sent on behalf of King Charles. The document, addressed to the couple’s team and British authorities, clarifies their status ahead of possible public appearances this autumn.
The letter sent by the Lord Chamberlain states that Harry and Meghan remain private citizens, with commercial and charitable activities carried out in their own names. They may no longer use the “HRH” styling, and any public engagements will take place in a private capacity, not on behalf of the Royal Family.
The message reaffirms the provisions of the Sandringham Agreement, reached in January 2020, when the couple stepped down from representative duties and withdrew as active members of the royal family. The agreement rules out an interim status that would allow them to pursue commercial interests while simultaneously undertaking royal duties.
The Palace said that any questions regarding the use of public funds should be directed to Buckingham Palace. Matters related to the couple’s security remain the responsibility of the relevant police authorities. Harry and Meghan’s representatives were invited to provide a response.
