The Kenyan Foreign Minister, Musalia Mudavadi, announced that Moscow and Nairobi have agreed that Kenyan citizens will no longer be recruited to fight in the war in Ukraine, following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.
Mudavadi emphasized that there will be no more recruitments through the Russian Ministry of Defense and that consular services will be organized for Kenyans in need of support. He mentioned that the relationship between Kenya and Russia is more complex than involvement in the conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov stated that recruitment was voluntary, but a report from Kenyan intelligence indicated that over 1,000 Kenyans had been recruited, facilitated by corrupt officials and human trafficking groups. The Kenyan government also proposes to stop this practice.
