Built on two artificial islands in Osaka Bay, the airport was considered an engineering achievement at its opening in 1994. However, the sinking has exceeded expectations, reaching approximately 12 meters, and experts warn that it could be completely submerged by 2056. In an attempt to save the airport, a massive levee was constructed, but many engineers believe that the measures are insufficient and too late. Typhoon Jebi in 2018 caused severe flooding, prompting authorities to invest in upgrades, including raising the levee by 2.7 meters. The airport is currently under renovation, with a budget of 740 million dollars, to increase capacity and strengthen its role as a regional transport hub.
