John Healey, former Minister of Defence, has been appointed Minister of Finance by the new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, according to Reuters. Healey, at 66 years old, will need to find additional funding for defense, as well as for health and social care. Although he was not considered a leading candidate for this position, Healey previously held the position of Deputy Minister of Finance.
His collaboration with Burnham is based on shared visions regarding economic stability and supporting the population. Healey has called for 3% of GDP to be allocated for defense, criticizing former Prime Minister Keir Starmer for a lack of action. At the same time, Ed Miliband has been appointed Foreign Secretary, a significant promotion for the former Labour leader. Shabana Mahmood will continue as Home Secretary, ensuring continuity in this role.
