U.S. Vice President JD Vance rejected calls for global regulation of artificial intelligence and urged the companies developing the most advanced models to take responsibility for the risks they create. He made the statement at an AI summit held in Los Angeles, amid fears over the emergence of a superintelligence.
Addressing Dario Amodei, co-founder of Anthropic, Vance said developers should not ask governments for rules after they “created Frankenstein’s monster,” but should either stop or provide the necessary safety tools themselves.
Amodei had warned that AI agents could come to control the internet within the next six to 12 months. An Anthropic researcher estimated the risk of AI killing humanity in the next decade at more than 10%, a claim that was challenged and later qualified.
Vance’s position differs from that of President Donald Trump, who called concerns about AI taking control a “hoax” and described the technology as an unprecedented economic engine. Meanwhile, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta are discussing joint safety measures, while critics accuse the industry of trying to influence the rules in its own interests.
