The main importer was the United States, followed by Taiwan, Thailand, and Germany. This ongoing increase, which has lasted for nine years, reflects the popularity of Japanese food among health-conscious consumers. However, annual deliveries remain below 10,000 tons, with a historic peak of 11,553 tons in 1954, partly due to the rising popularity of Chinese tea. Despite the low demand in Japan, tea leaf prices have risen, and production has decreased by over 10% compared to a decade ago, reaching approximately 74,000 tons in 2024.
