Japan announced the mobilization of its air force after detecting a drone, likely Chinese, near Yonaguni Island, located close to Taiwan. The incident occurred in the context of rising tensions between Tokyo and Beijing, triggered by statements from Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, who claimed that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could provoke a military response from Japan. Masaaki Kanai, the director for Asia and Oceania at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will meet with his Chinese counterpart to clarify Japan's position.
Takaichi may also discuss with Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the G20 summit in South Africa, although Beijing has announced that there will be no official meeting with him. Tensions have been exacerbated by Chinese maritime activities around the Senkaku Islands, which are controlled by Japan but claimed by China. Chinese media has criticized Takaichi's statements, considering them provocative.
